An overview of the institute
The Higher Institute of Heritage Crafts of Tunis was created by decree n° 1189 dating to June 30th, 2000. It is deemed as the first and unique institute specializing in heritage crafts training.
The institute has undergone four major stages ever since its creation:
  • Stage of license holders’ training (baccalaureate + 4 years) in the sciences and techniques of heritage. ( a stage stretching from 2000 to 2006).
  • Stage of technicians’ training (short cycle)with  the creation of 2 applied licenses starting from the academic year 2004/2005; the former in built heritage and the latter in art and decoration of heritage.
  • Stage of the adherence to the LMD system, starting  from the academic year 2006/2007 with the creation of the three following applied licenses:
    • Techniques of Valorization of Natural Heritage.
    • Arts and Techniques of heritage decoration.
    • Techniques of heritage documentation and promotion.
  • Master’s stage with the creation of 3 professional masters starting from the academic year 2009/2010:
  • Heritage Applied on Craftwork.
  • Heritage tourism.
  • Touristic Promotion of Heritage
Training domains and taught subjects

 At present the institute provides  a training at the level of applied license as well as professional master.
At the  of Applied License: schooling lasts 3 years. The education comprises subjects from Humanities and Social Sciences as well as cultural, natural and archaeological heritage fields, based on the credit regime.
       Each semester is composed of 6 courses (fundamental courses, cross_disciplinary courses and optional courses). The education  also involves field trips and professional trainings.
      In fact, each student is asked assignments related to his/her field of specialization in order to assure a practical training and a theoretical background , aimed at preparing him/her to apply later for jobs.
     In each license, students are offered  scientific training courses through lectures, practical work  in labs and workshops. Such a training covers different interesting themes such as:

  • History of Tunisia and the Mediterranean civilizations. Various  time periods.
  • Housing and Art History.
  • Natural and cultural Heritage.
  • Geography, the science of the Earth and Landscape.
  • Computer science applied to heritage.
  • Languages:  French, English, Italian.
  • Workshops: Casting, decorating, engraving, Carving, Creating.
  • The education is assured by university professors,  by professionals and by specialists in some heritage fields.

    The subjects are taught either in French or Arabic.
